Bathrooms
Mold and Mildew:
Prevention is the key!! Wiping down the shower after each use will prevent mildew and water spots. Sealing grout and doing weekly deep cleanings also helps to prevent big messes later on.
Dampness is a bathroom’s worst enemy-not only does it cause mold and mildew. It also warps cabinets, and creates smells. Keep the bathroom well ventilated.
If prevention didn’t work scrub the area with a mild detergent solution, such as a few drops of dishwashing liquid and warm water. Then scrub with a solution of ¼ cup of liquid bleach in one quart of water. Wait 20 minutes then repeat.
Straight vinegar is a natural alternative to bleach, though it is not quite as effective at killing mold spores as bleach and may take longer.
Showerhead:
Erratic or weak water pressure from the showerhead usually indicates mineral deposit build up. Remove the faceplate and soak it overnight in white vinegar, and scrub it with a toothbrush before replacing it. If you cannot remove the faceplate, you can fill a plastic storage bag with vinegar and secure the bag to the showerhead with rubber bands. Allow to soak overnight.
Shower Curtains
Plastic shower curtains are wonderful, they are not only waterproof, they also protect the pretty fabric curtain. Their down fall is, they tend to get that orange mildew and black mildew on the bottom seam.
To clean-take the plastic shower curtain and machine was. Wash it with rags or towels to provide scrubbing action. Hang to dry, preferably not in the bathroom.
If you plastic shower curtain is long enough, cut off the seam at the bottom to prevent mildew buildup. |
